Making Thanksgiving Memories: Fun Activities for Grandparents and Grandkids

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends. It’s even more special when you can spend it with your grandkids! While traditional Thanksgiving activities like preparing a big feast or playing family board games may come to mind, there are a number of other activities that you can do with your grandkids this Thanksgiving. Here are 5 of the best:

  1. Bake Thanksgiving Treats – While there is already a lot of food available on Thanksgiving, it doesn’t mean you have to stick to the traditional fare. Instead, why not have fun baking some Thanksgiving treats with your grandkids? There is something special about baking with your family, creating memories (and don’t forget lots of yummy treats too!) Have your grandkids help pick out the recipe and then the fun begins. From pumpkin pies to gingerbread turkeys, the possibilities are endless.

  1. Create a Thanksgiving Playlist – We all love music, and it’s especially nice when you can share it with your loved ones. Put together a special Thanksgiving playlist with your grandkids, sharing songs that you both love, or just put each grandchild in charge of finding their personal favorite Thanksgiving tunes that they like to listen to. Throughout the day you can have it playing in the background for everyone to enjoy.

  1. Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt – Ask your grandkids to help you create a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt. Stimulate their minds with creative questions that need to be solved, or even a list of items that need to be found. Compile the clues and create exciting hide and seek locations around the house, or even outdoors in the backyard.

  1. Craft Up a Thanksgiving Wreath – Gather up your grandkids and craft some decorations for your Thanksgiving gathering. Put each grandchild in charge of creating their own Thanksgiving wreath. Arm them with some twigs, feathers and paper that they can assemble into works of art. After the wreaths are complete, help each of them write the details of the holiday on construction paper chains.

  1. Thanksgiving Parade Watching Party – For many jurisdictions, there will still be Thanksgiving parades this year, even if co-viewers need to watch virtually. Why not host your own viewing party at home with your grandkids? Set up a cozy spot in the living room (or outdoors on the porch!) and enjoy the festivities together. Once the parades have finished, you can move onto other activities, or even have your own parade in your own backyard!

These 5 activities can help make Thanksgiving special and create wonderful memories that will be cherished for many years to come. At Deer Trail Assisted Living, we truly understand the importance of family and the joys that comes from being together. We hope that you and your grandkids have the most wonderful Thanksgiving ever!
