Here are our senior living health tips on how to protect your eyes. The best way to protect your vision is to catch problems early on with frequent eye exams. If you notice a change in your vision between examinations or if your eyes are hurt in any way, call your eye doctor as soon as possible. Remember, if you’re over 60, you should get your eyes checked once a year. Exercise, diet, rest, and other healthy behaviors can all help to keep your eyes healthy.
Here are seven strategies for maintaining healthy eyes:
- Stay active.
Regular exercise helps postpone age-related macular degeneration, the major cause of irreversible visual loss in old age.
- Schedule regular eye exams.
A thorough eye exam can discover major issues, such as diabetes, before you even realize you have them.
- Put on your sunglasses.
Sunglasses shield your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can be harmful even on cloudy days.
- Take a break.
To help avoid eye strain, take a 20-second break every 20 minutes when using your phone, tablet, or computer.
- Consume fruits and veggies.
Dry eyes, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other eye diseases can all be reduced with a diet rich in fruits, leafy greens, and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Get plenty of water.
You can’t generate enough tears to keep your eyes wet and nourished if you don’t drink enough water.
- Apply lubricant.
To reduce discomfort, moisten the eyes. Eye drops supplement your tears with some of the same nutrients.
