Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the special men in our lives. But for dads with dementia or Alzheimer’s, the holiday can be a challenge. They may not remember who you are or what the day is about. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still make it special.

Here are a few tips for making Father’s Day special for dads with dementia or Alzheimer’s:

Focus on the things he still enjoys. What are your dad’s favorite activities? Even if he can’t remember everything, he’ll still enjoy doing the things he loves. So plan a day around his interests. Go for a walk, listen to music, or watch his favorite movie.

Be patient and understanding. Dementia can make it difficult for people to communicate and express themselves. So be patient with your dad and don’t get frustrated if he doesn’t understand what you’re saying or doing. Just be there for him and let him know you love him.

Reminisce about the past. People with dementia often have fond memories of the past. So talk to your dad about his childhood, his family, and his career. Share stories and photos with him. This will help him feel connected to his past and to you.

Don’t forget the gift. A small gift is a nice way to show your dad how much you care. But don’t get too caught up in finding the perfect gift. The most important thing is that the gift is something your dad will enjoy. A favorite snack, a new book, or a gift certificate to his favorite store are all good options.

No matter what you do, the most important thing is to spend time with your dad and let him know how much you love him. Father’s Day is a special day to celebrate the dads in our lives. So make it a day to remember.
